How it works

How It Works

Design for Living provides structured, trauma-informed supported accommodation for women who need a safe space to stabilise, recover, and rebuild their lives. Our programme is designed to support women through a clear journey from crisis to independence.

1. Referral

Women can be referred to Design for Living by services such as probation, local authorities, support organisations, or other professionals.   Each referral is carefully reviewed to ensure the service is the right fit and that we can provide the appropriate level of support.

2. Assessment

Once accepted, we carry out an initial assessment to understand the woman’s needs, strengths, and goals. This includes exploring areas such as wellbeing, housing history, recovery needs, life skills, and future aspirations.

This helps us create a personalised care and support plan tailored to each individual.

3. Stabilisation

The first stage focuses on helping women settle into a safe and supportive environment. During this time we prioritise:

  • Emotional and physical safety
  • Building trust and routine
  • Accessing health and recovery support
  • Addressing immediate needs and risks

This stage helps create the stability needed for long-term progress.

4. Rebuilding

As women begin to stabilise, the focus shifts to personal development and building independence. This may include:

  • One-to-one keywork support
  • Recovery and wellbeing sessions
  • Developing life skills such as budgeting and cooking
  • Strengthening healthy relationships and boundaries
  • Accessing education, training, or volunteering opportunities

5. Moving Forward

Towards the end of the programme, support focuses on preparing women for the next stage of their journey. This includes:

  • Securing safe move-on accommodation
  • Building positive support networks
  • Strengthening confidence and resilience
  • Planning for employment, training, or further support

Our goal is that every woman leaves Design for Living with the skills, confidence, and support network needed to live independently and move forward positively.

Preparing for Independence

As women move towards the end of their placement, care plans focus on:

  • Securing safe move-on accommodation
  • Building sustainable support networks
  • Strengthening confidence and resilience
  • Connecting with community services and employment pathways

Our aim is that every woman leaves safer, stronger, and equipped for a more independent future.

Staff provide practical guidance about the house, routines, and available support, ensuring women feel comfortable and safe.
